MiGente Dating is a relative newcomer on the Latin dating scene with stacks of great features that we were super excited about checking out. Sign up is easy, just fill in your details and wait for a confirmation email in your inbox. Don't worry about spam, in the accounts settings section users can turn off all email alerts from MiGente. Once you are a confirmed member you can start exploring the site.

It should soon become clear that MiGente is basically a social network like Facebook or MySpace. It is made up of various profiles, groups, forums, news and games pages. First  is the home page on which members can post status updates and photos in real time. This is a great way to "put yourself out there" and is obviously a popular aspect of the site as it is often updated.

Unfortunately, we can't say the same for the rest of the site which seems to lack the critical mass of users required to keep a dating site fresh and exciting. This is especially important at MiGente as it is a user propelled dating site. This means that it is the users who contribute, earning points by writing blogs, creating groups, and improving your profile. With these points you can improve your position in members' searches and send gifts to other members.

However, it is clear that no one really bothers earning points as the blogs and news section is mainly spam. Likewise, most profiles are rather basic and no one responded to any of our friend requests. Apparently there are around 500 members online at any one time, but we didn't notice any activity on the site apart from the occasional status update. This could be because the website is ridden with bugs. The "online now" feature doesn't work, basic searches bring up no results, and the chat rooms are inaccessible and, as a consequence, empty.

The only thing that members do seem to regularly post are photos, which can be kind of fun to browse. There is also a Rate Me tool which can be a laugh. However, this is not enough to make MiGente a Latin dating website that we can take seriously.

It is also worth noting that this is an American site. Users from elsewhere will not find anyone in their countries, and will also be slightly confused by the language used; being British, it took us some time to work out that "giving props" means that basically you like something. Also, despite this being a Latin Dating site, there was no option to browse in Spanish, which we found rather disappointing.

Overall, MiGente is a nice idea, but they need to fix the bugs if they want to attract a large active user base; something vital in making the site work. Maybe MiGente just needs a little time to catch on, and for that reason we don't want to write it off. In the meantime however, we would recommend users serious about finding a date check out Amigos.com for a website that has got the formula for Latin dating just right.
